shipworm

Shipworm or pile worm (Teredo navalis L.), marine wood destroyer, feeds on wood (shipwrecks among other things!) and plankton.

Deciduous and coniferous wood is attacked and destroyed. The destruction is barely visible from the outside, as the holes made by the animals are very small. Distribution: all oceans
Body 15-20 cm long, ca. 1 cm thick
The figure shows a shipworm and below the drill holes in profile.
